To plan My Tho day-trip costs from Ho Chi Minh City, budget for four things: the car, any boat activity, food and personal extras. There is no single total that fits both a direct transfer and a car that waits all day and takes your group home.
My Tho is roughly 70–75 km from central Ho Chi Minh City, with a drive of about 1.5–2 hours in favorable traffic. A day trip is possible, but the time you spend at the river or at Vinh Trang Pagoda changes the transport arrangement.
Choose the outline of your day first. A river visit to Thoi Son Islet needs a boat; a land-based day can focus on the pagoda, lunch and a walk by the waterfront. Once you know which you prefer, the costs become much easier to compare.
See the current car fares on Ho Chi Minh City–My Tho route page. Then use this guide to work out what your own group needs beyond the drive.

What belongs in a My Tho day-trip budget?
Keep each cost in its own line. You can then change the plan without losing track of what is already covered.
- Car: vehicle size and whether the booking is one-way, return or for several stops.
- River activity: the boat or arranged program, including any stops and services it covers.
- Food: lunch, drinks and snacks that are not part of a booked activity.
- Extras: optional purchases and activities you decide to add.
Before adding lunch as a separate cost, check whether a river program includes it. Likewise, a one-way car fare does not cover an afternoon of waiting unless that arrangement has been quoted.
How should you estimate the car cost?
Start with a vehicle that fits your passengers and bags. The route table below shows current reference fares for the direct route. For a day trip, tell Car Booking where the car will pick you up, the stops you want, whether it waits and when you plan to return.
For example, a family might leave one address in Ho Chi Minh City, visit Vinh Trang Pagoda, continue to a river pier and return after lunch. That is a useful booking request. “Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho” alone does not show the extra stop, time at the pier or homeward journey.
Do not double a one-way fare and assume it covers that day. My Tho private car price guide explains the route price in more detail, while the live table here lets you compare the available vehicle categories.

What should you ask before paying for a river visit?
Ask the boat provider for the exact departure pier, meeting time, trip length, return pier and what is included. A “river tour” can describe a short crossing, several activities or a longer arranged program. The ticket description matters more to your budget than a broad label.
Thoi Son Islet is reached by boat, so the car needs the agreed pier in My Tho rather than the islet itself. If the boat provider sends the pier name after you book the car, pass it to the driver before travel. The My Tho pier guide explains which arrival details to check.
Leave enough time to return from the river and meet the driver. If lunch is included in the program, make a note of it; if not, choose where the group will eat after disembarking.
How much food should you plan for?
Decide what your group will actually eat rather than using a generic meal allowance. An early departure may call for breakfast or snacks on the road. Lunch might be part of a boat program or a separate stop in My Tho. Carry water and something familiar for children who may get hungry before the adults.
Give lunch a realistic place in the schedule. A boat’s stated return time is not the moment everyone is seated at a restaurant: passengers still have to disembark, find the car and travel to the next stop. If someone has dietary needs, ask about the menu before paying for a bundled meal.

Would a different vehicle change the budget?
Yes, but compare vehicles that can carry the same group comfortably. A four-seat car may be right for two travelers with light bags. A family with a stroller and several suitcases may need more room, especially if every seat is occupied on the return.
Count children as passengers and mention large bags, a folded stroller or a mobility aid. The seat label alone cannot tell you how much luggage fits with everyone aboard. The family car guide can help you choose a suitable category before comparing fares.
How do two simple day plans compare?
River day: drive to the confirmed pier, take the boat program, have lunch and return to Ho Chi Minh City. Budget for the car’s full-day arrangement, the boat and any food outside the program. Check when the group must be back at the pier.
Land day: visit Vinh Trang Pagoda, eat in My Tho and spend time near the river without booking a boat. You avoid a boat ticket, but the car still makes stops and returns to the city. It should not be treated as a direct one-way transfer.
Neither day is automatically cheaper. Choose the plan your group will enjoy, then price that plan. The one-day My Tho itinerary suggests a comfortable order for a river outing; the guide to combining local sights helps you select stops without filling every hour.
To compare the two fairly, keep the same travel date, passenger count and return time. Change only the activity plan and the stops it requires. Otherwise, a cheaper boat-free plan may appear to save money simply because its car quote leaves out the return or waiting. If your group includes someone who tires easily, also weigh the effort of boarding a boat against a slower land visit; the least expensive plan is not always the most comfortable one.
Is a per-person car cost useful?
It can be, once the complete car arrangement is confirmed. Divide that car quote by the people sharing it, then add each person’s activity and meal costs as your group has agreed. Dividing a one-way fare and calling it the price of a round trip gives a misleading result.
A family may pay together, while friends may split only some costs. Agree who will make the booking and who will pass on changes to the pier or return time. One clear contact keeps the quote tied to the same itinerary for everyone.
What could change the total?
Another pickup, a different pier, an extra stop, a longer wait or a later return can change the car arrangement. A new vehicle category can do the same if the original one cannot fit the luggage. Tell Car Booking about those changes before the journey where possible.
Keep a small personal allowance for drinks, snacks or an optional purchase. For a prepaid boat activity, ask that provider what happens if weather or a delay changes your plans. A simple land-based alternative is helpful on a day when a river visit no longer suits the group.
What should you send for a useful quote?
Send your travel date, exact pickup address, passenger and bag count, preferred vehicle, chosen pier if any, stops in order and the time you would like to leave My Tho. Say whether the car should wait or return later. If the boat is still undecided, say so and ask what details will be needed when you choose it.
A short message can be enough: “Four adults and one child, pickup in District 1 on Saturday morning, Vinh Trang first, then the pier our boat provider confirms, lunch in My Tho and return after lunch. We have two suitcases and a stroller. Please quote a vehicle that stays with us.” Replace those details with your own; the point is to show the whole day in one request.
- Check the current route fare for a vehicle that fits.
- Request a car quote for your complete day, including return and waiting if needed.
- Read the boat program’s inclusions before adding meals or activities.
- Keep the confirmed addresses and times together for the group.
Send your final addresses, stops and return plan through the My Tho route booking form. A quote for the actual journey is more useful than a generic day-trip total.
