On the usual road from Ho Chi Minh City to central Can Tho, the province-level names between the two cities are Tay Ninh, Dong Thap and Vinh Long.

Ho Chi Minh City is your starting municipality; Can Tho is the destination municipality.

Older route descriptions may say Long An and Tien Giang because those names belonged to separate provinces before the 2025 reorganisation.

You do not need to memorise the new boundaries to book a car. Share exact pickup and drop-off addresses through the Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho route; use the province list to understand the broad journey, not as a substitute for a meeting point.

Which provinces are between Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho?

For the common expressway corridor, the sequence is Tay Ninh, Dong Thap, then Vinh Long before reaching Can Tho. This is a province-level answer, not a list of every town, interchange or place name on the way.

If you see an older guide listing Long An and Tien Giang, it is describing familiar areas with their former provincial labels. The physical road did not suddenly move because an administrative name changed.

Why do Long An and Tien Giang still appear?

In the 2025 arrangement, the former Long An province became part of the new Tay Ninh province; former Tien Giang became part of the new Dong Thap province. Both older names remain useful for recognising an area, a business address or a road sign. They are not two extra provinces to add to today’s province count for this trip.

Vinh Long is still a province name, though its boundaries also changed. Can Tho remains a centrally governed city. For a booking, copy the address supplied by the hotel or host exactly, including any current ward information they provide, rather than rewriting it from memory.

How does the route cross those areas?

Drivers commonly consider the Ho Chi Minh City-Trung Luong-My Thuan-Can Tho expressway corridor. The journey leaves Ho Chi Minh City, passes the former Long An area, reaches the former Tien Giang area, then continues through Vinh Long towards Can Tho. That is the geography behind the current names above.

The province list does not tell you how many kilometres your car will cover. A pickup in a western part of Ho Chi Minh City differs from an airport pickup, and a Can Tho riverside hotel differs from a homestay farther away. how the Can Tho road distance is measured explains how to measure the actual road trip.

A province name is not a pickup or rest stop

“Pick us up in Dong Thap” is too broad for a driver. Send a street address, a business entrance or a location pin, and say whether the car must leave the expressway to reach it. The same applies to a meal stop: a restaurant may appear close to the route but have no convenient legal access from your direction of travel.

If you are meeting relatives in the former Long An or Tien Giang area, identify the exact door and the order of pickups. This matters more to the journey than whether a friend’s older address still uses an old province name.

Will every Can Tho trip cross the same places?

The three-name answer fits the usual direct corridor. A detour, a different pickup or a stop for someone outside that corridor can change the areas you actually enter. It can also change where you leave and rejoin the main road.

Compare roads using the same pickup and drop-off points. the road-choice guide covers that route choice; it is more useful than trying to choose a road solely from a province list.

Three questions travellers actually face

“My old booking says Long An. Is the address wrong?”

Not necessarily. It may use the former province name for a place now within Tay Ninh. Confirm the street, house number and pin with the person at the pickup point rather than changing only the province label.

“Does passing Dong Thap mean a stop in the provincial centre?”

No. Passing through a province on the road is not the same as visiting its administrative centre. A stop requires its own address and time allowance.

“Can we collect someone before entering Can Tho?”

Yes, if the pickup can be arranged on a usable road. Give the exact location and compare the resulting itinerary, not just the direct city-to-city route. the Can Tho travel-time planning guide helps you plan the extra time.

Turn the geography into a usable plan

  • Write the pickup and destination addresses as the hosts currently use them.
  • Mark any intermediate collection, meal or rest stop with a precise location.
  • Check whether an old Long An or Tien Giang label refers to the same place on today’s map.
  • Keep the province list separate from the driving time and distance estimate.

Once the stops are clear, the Can Tho route page can be used to send the journey to the booking team.

Questions about the provinces on this route

Are Long An and Tien Giang still separate provinces?

No. After the 2025 province-level reorganisation, the former Long An area is within Tay Ninh and the former Tien Giang area is within Dong Thap. The names may still appear in familiar addresses and directions.

Is Can Tho one of the provinces in between?

No. It is the destination city in this question, not an intermediate province.

Does the province list determine the fastest road?

No. Start and end addresses, stops and current road conditions determine the practical route. A list of administrative areas cannot replace that check.

For a door-to-door plan, use the Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho route with the actual addresses and travel date.
